Too small to overlook - Nature, USA
Voluntary reporting of nanomaterials by industry has failed. Instituting mandatory reporting is a welcome move towards effective oversight, but it is only one of many steps that are needed.
Five research challenges would help support evidence-based decisions on using nanotechnology safely: these include exposure monitoring, toxicity testing, predicting and avoiding harmful behaviour and evaluating risks for the lifespan of the material.
For research and regulation to work, more needs to be done to facilitate the flow of information between organizations.
More effective and timely data sharing and oversight at the local, national and international level are needed.
Nanotechnology: Weighing the risks of regulation - 2020 Science, USA
To complement today’s commentary on nanotechnology regulation in the journal Nature, written jointly with David Rejeski, I thought it would be interesting to post an early draft of the same paper here. This is what the piece looked like before we started working with the journal’s editors on cleaning it up and squeezing it into an impossibly small number of words.
