Social implications of a nanotechnology 'revolution'? - Friends of the Earth, Australia
Despite proponents' claims that nanotechnology will deliver key social and environmental benefits, research spending and products released so far demonstrate the primacy of the profit motive in guiding nanotechnology development. The most important challenge, given a nanotechnology 'revolution' being driven by public money, is to democratise its development.
Fishing for nano risks with the wrong type of fishing net: European Parliament calls for sweeping review of current regulations concerning nanomaterials - Innovation Society, Switzerland
The European Commission is now urged (although not in a legally binding way) to propose reviews of all relevant legislation within two years to ensure safety for all applications of nanomaterials in products with potential health, environmental or safety impacts over their life cycle, and to ensure that legislative provisions and instruments of implementation reflect the particular features of nanomaterials. It is clear that this is both very ambitious and sophisticated and would induce considerable efforts to fully comply with.
